FONG ENTERED HIS SLEEPING compartment and triumphantly held up a bottle of bourbon. “Ha! Told you I could do it. Lookee what I got!”

Daniel laughed from where he sat cross-legged on a pillow on the floor where they’d been playing cards. “How’d you manage it?”

Fong sat down opposite Daniel and uncorked the bottle. “Would you believe that I seduced the porter?”

“You weren’t gone long enough to seduce anyone, let alone the porter,” Daniel said. “He doesn’t seem like the type.”

Fong reached for Daniel’s glass. “Well, you’re wrong. He is definitely the type. A man like me recognizes these things.”

Daniel accepted his refilled glass from Fong. “Oh, yeah? How?”

Fong took a sip of the bourbon. “Mmm, that’s the good stuff. Too bad I don’t have time to properly thank the gentleman. He’s not bad on the eyes.”

Daniel grinned. “Is it strange that I feel a little jealous? I thought you wanted me?”

“Oh, I do, and if I didn’t respect you, I’d get you completely drunk and seduce you,” Fong said. “But, since I do respect you and value your friendship, I’ll control myself.”

“Thanks,” Daniel said. “Thanks for everything, Fong. I don’t know what I would’ve done without you. It’s not just anyone who would’ve done what you did. You’re a good friend.”

Fong held up his glass. “To good friends.”

“To good friends,” Daniel said, clinking his glass against Fong’s before taking a sip. “You’re right. That’s smooth. Can I ask you something personal?”

Fong smiled and pulled a cigarette from his pocket. “Smoke?”

“I don’t smoke, but I don’t care if you do,” Daniel said.

“I wouldn’t care if you did. This is my room,” Fong retorted and lit his cigarette.

Daniel chuckled. “Smart ass.”

“Guilty. Let me guess; you want to know when I first knew that I wasn’t like other boys, when I lost my virginity, all of that stuff, right?” Fong asked after he’d taken a drag.

Daniel scooted back until he could lean his back against the wall. “Yeah. You don’t have to answer, but I can’t help being curious.”

Seeing that they weren’t going to play cards anymore, Fong started gathering them up. “I’ve always known. Even when I was little, I knew.”

“How?”

“For one thing, I wanted to wear dresses and be pretty like Jin. And I was pretty, too. Until we were about eight, we were identical. Then I started getting taller and I looked more masculine. Damn it. I should’ve been born a girl. Then you’d like me.” Fong winked at Daniel.

Daniel nodded. “You’re probably right. Don’t get excited, but you’re a very good-looking guy. I see the way women look at you. You’re like the male equivalent of Jin.”

“I like women,” Fong said. “They do if it’s been a while, but they’re not what I really want.”

Daniel sat forward in surprise. “You’ve been with women?”

Fong said, “Yeah. I lost my virginity to a woman. You have no idea what it’s like to have to pretend to be something you’re not. You can’t be truthful with anyone, not even yourself—at least at first.
